About
WVCI MIssion
The mission of the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative (WVCI) is to serve as a central organizing and information-sharing entity for programs, projects, and activities that commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, educate the public on the legal and social advances resulting from the amendment, and stimulate dialogue to address the ongoing fight for women’s rights.
WVCI Vision
Nearly 100 years ago, women around the US protested, picketed, and were imprisoned to secure their constitutional right to vote. Today, only 19.6% of elected officials in Congress are women, and during the 2016 presidential election, one in every three women eligible to vote did not cast a ballot. 2020 WVCI stands proudly on the shoulders of the brave and brilliant suffragists as we honor their legacy and continue the unfinished business of creating a more equal and just society.
WVCI PURPOSE
Created in 2015, the purpose of the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative is to ensure that the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment is celebrated and commemorated throughout the United States in ways that: 1) include the influence and stories of the various components of the suffrage movement in ways that reflect the accuracy of the historical record; 2) recognize the legal and social advances resulting from the 19th Amendment; 3) acknowledge the inadequacies of the Amendment’s implementation; 4) describe its continuing relevance to the ongoing struggle for equal rights; 5) encourage involvement in large and small activities at all levels by diverse public, nonprofit, and private organizations and individuals.
WVCI partners
The 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative (WVCI) is a collaborative effort created to share information and stimulate activities around the country in the years leading up to 2020. We operate as a volunteer initiative that is composed of a broad range of groups and individuals who collectively represent various segments of the historical women’s suffrage movement and contemporary women’s organizations. Although these partnerships are no longer active, WVCI thanks every organization for joining us in the celebration of the 2020 Centennial and making it such a success!
